No one is white, except in our bones and teeth and nails. whiteness is inside us all, our protection against fear. These “white” policeman are scared to death, not using their whiteness at all.
Likewise, no one is black, we are all shades: the inheritance of hundreds of thousands of years of being alienated from our selves. We are brown, and yellow, and blue in our veins, red we blush when our blood touches air. All of us were from Africa born, Adam and Eve were black. Jesus was brown, it’s like who cares the color of your skin. Race is not a real thing.
Maybe nationality is. Americans are from all over the world. We are made up of every nation and the thing that holds us together is a dream: the American dream of liberty and justice for all. Not happening.
I am so mournful about this state of the United States of America, a nation I joined as a child, took an oath to honor and protect, and daily pledged my allegiance throughout my school years, is failing us. We all pledged to the republic for which that flag symbolizes, one nation, under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for All.
We attribute parts of ourselves to a symbol when we assign meaning to that symbol. All words actually are symbols for a particular meaning that we have assigned, that comes out of our memory and experience when we first learned the word. So “purple” may mean grapes and plums from the fall harvest in Southern California to me, and to you it means a purple barrette that your grandmother gave you as a toddler. It’s always our personal purple that we see, though without the words the experience is fresh and alive in our sensing.
Wikipedia tells us that A symbol is a mark, sign, or word that indicates, signifies, or is understood as representing an idea, object, or relationship. Symbols allow people to go beyond what is known or seen by creating linkages between otherwise very different concepts and experiences. All communication (and data processing) is achieved through the use of symbols. Symbols take the form of words, sounds, gestures, ideas, or visual images and are used to convey other ideas and beliefs. For example, a red octagon may be a symbol for “STOP”. On a map, a blue line might represent a river. Numerals are symbols for numbers. Alphabetic letters may be symbols for sounds. Personal names are symbols representing individuals. A red rose may symbolize love and compassion. The variable ‘x’, in a mathematical equation, may symbolize the position of a particle in space.
The flag is American’s symbol of the promise and pledge we hold dear. Black, White, whatever color you think you are, that pledge applies to you. You are part of the ALL, to which Liberty and Justice belong with.
It’s time for the United States to represent US.
Those in power always set it up so that there’s a them for us to blame for our ills. “Us against them”, keeps those in power safe from our anger, and feeds into their war machines for more profits.
So, this assault and murder on a clearly innocent man, is a set up. We are being set up to get angry, to protest, to be confronted and assaulted again by police whenever they can see a way. The police have been given all the tools of war, and now they are ready for a war against their own people, us. Again, us. US and it’s USA who will suffer.
Protest we must. Justice must be served. But how sad that the USA is no longer the paragon of Justice for All- maybe it never was. It’s time for us to align ourselves with the pledge that makes our nation under God, indivisible. Or it could explode into divisions very harmful, if not fatal, to our United States.
Carry that flag and unite US to become honestly just, honestly free, and honestly brothers.
